Experience one of the most spectacular ridge crossings on the Grossglockner – the Glocknerwand Traverse.This high-alpine adventure is considered one of the finest and most demanding ridge routes in the Eastern Alps. Guided by a certified mountain and ski guide from MT Experts, you’ll climb across seven towers of the Glocknerwand, traverse the Teufelshorn and Glocknerhorn, and finally reach the main summit (3,798 m) via the combined North-West Ridge.

Technically, the route features rock climbing up to UIAA grade IV, with a ridge that is about three times longer than the Stüdlgrat. Expect a full-day alpine experience of exposed ridge climbing, mixed rock and ice, and breathtaking views throughout.

Itinerary – 2 days of high-alpine adventure

Day 1 – Approach to the Stüdlhütte

Meeting point on the evening before the climb at the Stüdlhütte (2,801 m).The ascent from the Lucknerhaus (1,918 m) takes about 2.5 hours with roughly 900 m of elevation gain. At the hut, rental gear is distributed, crampons are fitted, and the route briefing takes place – ensuring everyone is well prepared for the big day.

Day 2 – Glocknerwand Traverse & Grossglockner summit (3,798 m)

We start before dawn, hiking by headlamp over the Ködnitz or Teischnitz Glacier to the col between Teufelskamp and Glocknerwand (approx. 2–2.5 hours). From here, the ridge traverse begins: climbing over seven rocky towers of the Glocknerwand with multiple short abseils, continuing over the Teufelshorn (crux UIAA IV) and Glocknerhorn, before joining the North-West Ridge to reach the summit of the Grossglockner (3,798 m).

After enjoying the view, we descend via the Adlersruhe and return to the Stüdlhütte, which we reach in the early afternoon. Total time from the hut: approx. 10 hours climbing; total duration of the entire tour including descent: approx. 14 hours.A second night at the hut is recommended due to the tour’s length.
