The High Tirol Ski Traverse is known as the Queen of the Eastern Alps –a legendary and challenging multi-day ski crossing from South Tyrol to the Grossglockner (3,798 m),Austria’s highest peak.Over six impressive days, this route covers 140 kilometers and around 18,000 vertical meters,linking classic alpine peaks such as the Großer Geiger, Großvenediger, Stubacher Sonnblick, and finally the Grossglockner.

Guided by a certified mountain and ski guide, you’ll experience an unforgettable journeythrough glacier terrain, high passes, remote valleys, and Austria’s most beautiful summit ridges –professionally organized and safely led.

The route offers several variations and optional extensions,and can be adapted to the group’s ability, snow, and weather conditions.

Itinerary – 6 Days High Tirol Ski Traverse


Day 1 – Ascent to the Essener-Rostocker Hut (2,208 m)


Starting point in Kasern (1,600 m) in South Tyrol.We ascend along an old smuggler’s path over the Umbaltörl (2,848 m)and the Reggentörl (3,056 m) to the Essener-Rostocker Hut.A long but technically moderate stage – the perfect start to find your rhythm for the days ahead.

Day 2 – Großer Geiger (3,360 m) & Johannishütte / Kürsinger Hut


From the Essener-Rostocker Hut, we climb through the Maurertal Valleyto the Geigerscharte (2,400 m) and along the western ridge to the Großer Geiger.Descent via the Türmljoch (2,845 m) to the Johannishütte (2,121 m)or optionally via the Maurertörl (3,105 m) and the Obersulzbach Glacier to the Kürsinger Hut (2,558 m).

  • Ascent 1,150–1,350 m Duration 6–8 h


Day 3 – Großvenediger (3,662 m) & Descent to Matreier Tauernhaus


The highlight of the day: the ascent of the Großvenediger, Austria’s fourth-highest mountain.After the summit, we enjoy an unforgettable descent over the Schlaten Glacier,passing the Neue Prager Hut and continuing 2,000 vertical meters downinto the idyllic Innergschlöss Valley, then onward to the Matreier Tauernhaus (1,512 m).

Day 4 – Stubacher Sonnblick (3,088 m) & Rudolfshütte (2,311 m)


From the Felbertauern toll station (reached by taxi or shuttle),we climb northeast along the Daberbach valley, past the Daberseen (2,400 m)and through the Granatscharte (2,974 m) to reach the Stubacher Sonnblick (3,088 m).The descent leads over the Sonnblick Glacier to the Weißseeand finally to the Rudolfshütte, our base for the night.

Day 5 – Granatspitze (3,086 m) & Ascent to the Stüdlhütte (2,801 m)


We begin with an ascent via the Granatscharte (2,974 m) to the Granatspitze,a panoramic summit with a breathtaking view of the Grossglockner.The descent leads steeply down the Kalser Tauern Glacier into the Dorfer Valley,past the Kalser Tauernhaus and then by taxi or bus to the Lucknerhaus (1,918 m).From there, we ascend through the Ködnitztal Valley to the Stüdlhütte,the base for our final summit day.

Day 6 – Grossglockner (3,798 m) – Top of Austria


Early in the morning, we set out from the Stüdlhütte across the Ködnitz Glacierand climb the Glocknerleitl to the Kleinglockner, then traverse the Glocknerscharteand ascend over solid rock to the summit of the Grossglockner –the highest point in Austria and the crown of the High Tirol Traverse.A long, spectacular descent leads back to the Lucknerhaus, the end of our journey.

Requirements


  • Excellent fitness for daily ascents up to 2,000 vertical meters

  • Confident skiing in off-piste & glacier terrain

  • Experience using crampons, ice axe & rope techniques

  • Surefootedness & no fear of heights on ridges
